Press Release PicoCore™MX8MM
Further versions of the PicoCore™ modules from F&S Elektronik Systeme GmbH with the successful NXP i.MX 8M Mini CPU
F&S Elektronik has been offering PicoCore™MX8MM modules since the beginning of 2020. Now the range of available modules has been extended by further modules with additional interfaces.
As of now, i.MX8M Mini modules are available with 2x Gigabit Ethernet or RGMII interface as well as with MIPI-DSI or also LVDS (up to FullHD). The complete overview of all modules with i.MX8M Mini can be found on the homepage of F&S Elektronik.
The PicoCore™MX8MM offers a lot of computing power and low power dissipation in a compact size, ideally suited for secure cloud connections. The small size (35 x 40mm) makes the board an ideal partner for compact devices.
NXP's i.MX 8M Mini is a heterogeneous multi-core application processor. It combines high-performance computing, energy efficiency, enhanced system security and embedded security, which is needed to drive the innovation and growth of technology such as edge node computing, streaming services in multimedia and machine learning applications.
At the heart of the processor is a scalable core complex with one, two or four ARM® Cortex®-A53 cores (1.8GHz) plus a Cortex®-M4 for real-time processing at 400MHz.
Unlike other NXP CPUs, the Cortex-M4 core can be booted first. Optionally, the Cortex-A53 or the Cortex-M4 can be switched on first. An adapted FreeRTOS with many examples is available for the latter.
The i.MX 8M Mini has 1080p hardware video acceleration for implementing two-way video applications. The integrated 3D and 2D hardware acceleration offers sufficient performance for a modern user interface.
The PicoCore™ standard uses two connectors (Hirose DF40C) with 100 pins each. This enables a compact design and a small board-to-board distance (1.5-4mm board-to-board). The PicoCore™MX8MM is offered with up to 512MB SLC NAND Flash or 64MB eMMC. The two 100-pin connectors enable a wide range of interfaces such as: 2x SD card slot, 1-2 GBit Ethernet/ RGMII, 2x USB, CAN, 4x I2C, 2x SPI, 4x UART, audio (Line In/ Out/ Mic/ Headphone or I2S), PCIe, GPIO, PWM and MIPI-CSI for camera connectivity. A MIPI-DSI (4 lanes) or alternatively LVDS 24-bit interface is provided as display connection. I2C is used to connect a touch panel. The PicoCore™MX8MM is complemented by an optional WLAN/BT5.0 LE module (pre-certified) with antenna sockets.
The operating system Linux (with support for Buildroot and Yocto), was ported by the experienced software team of F&S Elektronik Systeme. The drivers for all interfaces were adapted and tested. With the help of the virtual machine provided for download, you can immediately start developing your own application, e.g. under QT.
In addition to Secure Boot (protection of the system against manipulation and protection of the software against decryption), there is also an optional additional security chip on the module.
The customer can programme the certificates himself, alternatively F&S offers this as a service.
With the F&S project guarantee, F&S Elektronik Systeme accompanies customers from the start of the project to its successful completion. Starter kits and workshops, documentation for hardware and software development and free support from the experienced engineers at F&S Elektronik Systeme GmbH are available for this purpose.
The PicoCore™MX8MM is available until at least 2035.
F&S offers further pin-compatible PicoCore™ modules, also with the new i.MX8M Plus CPU, from stock.
The PicoCore™MX8MM can be purchased directly from F&S Elektronik Systeme or from one of its worldwide distribution partners.
