For PicoCOM1, two different LINUX distributions are available:
- Free Evaluation Edition
- Professional Edition with costs
Evaluation Edition
This BSP edition is free for customers but not supported by emlix. This version was designed for evaluating hardware with Linux as an operating system.
This version was created for testing purposes only. It does not contain all drivers and it cannot be guaranteed that all drivers run smoothly. Neither emlix nor F&S offer support. Installing the software happens at the customer's risk. Potential problems occurring when installing this software lie in the user's own responsibilities. Hardware damages or deleted bootloaders are not a warranty case.
Professional Edition
Professional BSP was designed for the usage in development projects.
Support and free updates make it possible for Professional Edition customers to integrate updates and bug fixes easily.
Compared to the Evaluation Edition, the following features are included (i.a.):
- SPI display
- USB Device driver, Ethernet and file storage
- UBI/ UBIFS/ Squashfs
- e2fsprogs
- e2 packager including tooling
- deployer
- e2sb (fronted for e2 packager)
- dhcp client and server
- eclipse IDE Pro
- mpg123
- duma
- gdb6 on target
- canfestival
- ppp
- ntp
- sqlite
- udev
- Icd4linux
- Start-up Support
- Updates (12 months)
emlix package manager - e2 packager - is one of the interesting features of the Professional Edition, since it is dealing with ressources responsibly. Thanks to appendant tooling, self-designed software can be embedded safely and comfortably into the package administration of the Target.

Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 on PicoCOM1 offers bootloader, kernels (e.g. with Silverlight, Mediaplayer or IE). Interface drivers for almost every offered interface are ready to use.
Take further use of your Windows kowledge by creating your software with Visual Studio .NET in the languages C, C++, C# or VB.NET.
Use interfaces like I²C the same way like a RS232 interface without having to handle the underlying hardware.
Configure the display and other settings with the F&S configuration tool.
Our FailSafe Flash File System F3S is also available for WCE 6.0.

PicoCOM1 was the first member of a new product family. The customer receives the processing power of a 32Bit CPU combined with the comfort and functionality of Windows Embedded CE or Linux for the price of a common 8/16Bit μP-System. For Medical and Technical EngineeringThe module with integrated operating system is based on ARM9 technology and a surface area of only 20cm² (40mm x 50mm). This compact module is suitable for hand-held products and as an additional communication module for existing industrial (-20°C - +85°C) and medical applications. It provides an easy way to upgrade these already available devices with USB (Memory Stick/ ActiveSync), Ethernet (FTP/ HTTP/ Telnet Server) and Audio (VoIP/ WAV/ MP3). Small and InexpensiveThe PicoCOM family by F&S offer the user a small and inexpensive communication processor. |
Standard Interfacesmain criteria when developing the concept was to offer the user a large number of standardized interfaces, which are all supported by the integrated operating system. It makes it easier for the user to realize his communication task in software, without needing to have larger hardware knowledge. It should be equally easy from hardware-side to handle the module. The complete power management (power supply, reset) is found on the assembly. A 80 poles plug connector connects the module to the user's application. The application only needs necessary driver components for existing or wanted interfaces.
