F&S Elektronik Systeme and QNX Collaborate to Accelerate Development of Next-Generation Medical Devices
F&S to demonstrate a real-time medical application simulation powered by the safety-certified QNX Operating System at Embedded World
Stuttgart, Germany, March 09, 2026 F&S Elektronik Systeme today announced it is collaborating with QNX, a division of BlackBerry Limited (NYSE: BB; TSX: BB), to offer QNX® Operating System (OS) 8.0 support for the F&S PicoCore™ i.MX93 System-on-Module, providing a safe and scalable platform to streamline the development of next-generation medical devices. This production-ready foundation enables developers to focus on innovation rather than low-level software integration, accelerating time-to-market while also providing a scalable frameworkthat can easily be reused and repurposed across multiple medical device programs.
A Commercial Grade Solution for Healthcare Applications
QNX OS 8.0 is the next-generation operating system for safety-critical embedded systems. Built on a microkernel architecture, it is designed to deliver high levels of safety, security, and deterministic performance. QNX is widely used across medical technologies including diagnostics, therapeutic and imaging applications. Trusted by leading medical device manufacturers, QNX OS 8.0 provides a dependable software foundation that supports compliance with stringent safety standards such as IEC 62304 while also addressing evolving cybersecurity requirements.
“Medical device manufacturers are under increasing pressure to deliver innovation while meeting the highest standards for safety, security, and regulatory compliance. By collaborating with QNX, we are combining our proven embedded hardware expertise with a safety-certified, real-time operating system trusted across the medical industry. Together, we provide our customers with a production-ready, secure platform that reduces development complexity, shortens certification cycles, and creates a scalable foundation for next-generation medical technologies.”
- Andreas Kopietz, Dipl.-Ing., Sales Manager, F&S Elektronik Systeme
“As medical devices become more connected and intelligent, the need for secure, real‑time software platforms has never been greater. This collaboration with F&S brings together the proven reliability of our microkernel architecture with their innovation in embedded computing. Together, we’re helping medical device manufacturers accelerate development, reduce risk, and bring life‑critical technologies to market with confidence.”
— Romain Saha, Senior Director, Strategic Alliances, QNX
“At NXP, we are committed to empowering our ecosystem partners as they bring safe, secure, and intelligent medical technologies to life. F&S’s integration of QNX OS 8.0 on the PicoCore™ i.MX93 SOM is a strong example of how collaboration accelerates innovation for the healthcare market. By combining advanced real-time performance, proven safety certifications, and scalable computing, this solution enables medical device manufacturers to reduce development risk and deliver reliable, next‑generation clinical experiences with confidence.”
— Robert Thompson, Partner Marketing Director, NXP Semiconductors
Security by Design for Medical Devices
As cybersecurity risks to medical devices and healthcare infrastructure increase, secure system design has become the de facto standard across the industry. Manufacturers can leverage QNX’s secure-by-design microkernel architecture to isolate system functions and prevent faults or vulnerabilities in one component from cascading across the system.
This architectural approach supports compliance with evolving cybersecurity expectations from regulatory bodies such as the FDA, and IMDRF, while providing manufacturers with a strong security foundation that does not compromise real-time performance, safety and or system stability.
Real-Time Medical Application Simulation on the Safety-Certified RTOS
At Embedded World 2026, F&S and QNX will jointly showcase a cardiology application visualization demo, which simulates patient data in real time, including ECG-like waveforms, SpO₂, heart rate, and respiration. The user interface is implemented using LVGL, a widely adopted open-source graphics framework optimized for embedded systems.
Running on QNX OS 8.0, the application highlights key capabilities required for medical devices:
- Deterministic real-time behavior for safety-critical workloads
- Rich graphical rendering and responsive user interaction
- Clear separation between application logic, graphics, and operating system services
With this demonstration, developers can replicate for a variety of medical device applications requiring graphics, including portable patient monitors, bedside devices, and mobile diagnostic equipment.
In addition to patient monitoring applications, the F&S PicoCore™ i.MX93 SOM is well suited for a wide range of medical devices includinglaboratory and blood analysis systems, imaging and diagnostic equipment, and surgical robotic systems.
